Sun, lagoons and beaches with shallow water
About the Algarve
The Algarve is Portugal’s sunny south coast, but it’s more than just seaside resorts. To the west, you’ll find golden cliffs and small coves; to the east lies the Ria Formosa: a protected lagoon area with sandy islands, salt pans and fishing villages such as Fuseta, Olhão and Tavira. Beyond that lies the hilly inland region, with orange groves, carob trees and white villages around Moncarapacho.
The eastern Algarve is particularly lovely for young families. The island beaches in the lagoon are wide, the water is often shallow and calm, and a short boat ride of just a few minutes takes you straight onto the sand. Many properties are situated just outside the villages, with a garden, a terrace and often a swimming pool.
Why go on holiday to the Algarve?
A holiday in the Algarve means sunshine for much of the year. It’s also pleasant there in spring and autumn, and from Faro Airport you can often reach your destination in the eastern Algarve within half an hour.
The Algarve is perfect for spending time outdoors with young children. A trip to the beach in the morning, a nap in the shade at lunchtime, and a stroll along the harbour or through the market at the end of the day. The Portuguese are very welcoming towards children, and little ones are simply part of the scene on terraces and in restaurants.
In the eastern Algarve, take the ferry to one of the islands in the Ria Formosa, such as Ilha de Tavira or Armona. The crossing takes just a few minutes and is an adventure in itself, even for small children. On the lagoon side, the water is often calm and shallow, ideal for paddling.
Keep an eye out for the beach vendors with their cool boxes: they sell bolas de Berlim, soft sugar buns filled with custard. A Portuguese beach tradition that children immediately take to.
