The Ardennes: forests, rivers and castles
About Belgian Luxembourg
The province of Luxembourg is the heart of the Belgian Ardennes. Deep forests, meandering rivers such as the Semois and the Ourthe, and villages built of grey natural stone characterise the landscape here. Around Herbeumont and Bouillon, the Semois winds its way through the landscape, with castles perched on the cliffs and viewpoints that take your breath away.
For young families, it’s an adventurous destination close to home. You’ll stay in holiday homes, old farmhouses and gîtes nestled amongst the woods, often with a garden to play in and a campfire for the evening.
Why go on holiday to Belgian Luxembourg?
Going on holiday in the Ardennes feels like a real getaway into nature. Children skip stones across the river, look for frogs, spot deer at the edge of the forest and climb up to a viewpoint overlooking the valley. There are walks of all lengths, from a short loop around the village to a longer hike with a baby carrier.
There are also days out that children won’t forget in a hurry: Bouillon Castle with its corridors and towers, or the Euro Space Centre in Transinne, where little explorers can feel like astronauts for a while.
Plan an afternoon in the Ardennes on the banks of the Semois. Find a shallow spot, take off your shoes and let the children build little dams out of stones. It’s free, requires no preparation whatsoever and often creates the fondest memories of the whole holiday.
Why not treat yourself to an ice cream in Bouillon at lunchtime, whilst enjoying the view of the castle overlooking the town?
