About Belgian Limburg
Belgian Limburg is a province with two distinct faces. In the south lies Haspengouw, a rolling fruit-growing landscape with orchards, castles and small villages around Borgloon, Heers and Tongeren. Further east still lie the green hills of the Voer region, which border almost directly on the Dutch Heuvelland. In the north, you’ll find the Kempen, with heathland, pine forests, fens and the Hoge Kempen National Park.
For young families, Limburg is easy to navigate and surprisingly varied. There are plenty of holiday homes and farmhouses in the countryside, with animals in the yard and a playground or orchard right on the doorstep.
Why go on holiday to Belgian Limburg?
Going on holiday in Belgian Limburg means discovering something new without straying far from home. It’s just a short trip from the south of the Netherlands, and the province is full of day-out ideas that are perfect for young children. Think of the open-air museum and playground at Bokrijk, the cycle routes through Haspengouw or a walk in the woods in the Kempen.
Haspengouw is at its most beautiful in spring, when thousands of fruit trees are in bloom all at once. In summer and autumn, you can simply pop into a roadside fruit stall to buy apples, pears and cherries.
Why not try ‘cycling through the water’ in Bokrijk or ‘cycling through the trees’ in Bosland near Pelt, in Limburg? On the first route, you’ll cycle along a path that runs right through a pond, with the water at eye level beside you. On the second, you’ll wind your way along a wooden path through the treetops. Both routes are easily manageable with a child seat or bike trailer.
Pick up a bottle of fresh apple juice from a fruit grower in Haspengouw on the way. That’ll complete your picnic straight away.
