Creeks, castles and the city of Ghent
About East Flanders
East Flanders lies between the coast and Brussels and boasts a surprising variety of landscapes for such a small province. In the north-west lies the Meetjesland, with creeks, polders and peaceful cycle routes. In the south, you’ll find the Flemish Ardennes, with hills and cobbled roads famous for their cycle races. And right in the middle lies Ghent, with castles, canals and a bustling city centre.
For young families, East Flanders offers a lovely mix of countryside and city life. You can stay out in the countryside amongst the fields, yet still get to Ghent quickly for a day out.
Why go on holiday in East Flanders?
Going on holiday in East Flanders means you don’t have to choose between nature and the city. One day you can cycle along the creeks of the Meetjesland or go for a walk in the woods, and the next day you can step inside the Gravensteen in Ghent, a genuine medieval castle with towers and battlements.
The province is flat to gently undulating, which makes cycling with a child seat or bike trailer a lot easier. Along the way, you’ll come across playgrounds, farms and outdoor cafés.
Pick up a bag of ‘Gentse neuzen’ in Ghent. These are cone-shaped purple sweets with a soft, sweet filling, which you’ll mainly find at stalls in the city centre. For children, choosing one is a real treat, and it makes for a lovely, typically Ghent-style souvenir of the day.
