Flemish Brabant

Castles, hills and green spaces around Leuven

About Flemish Brabant

Flemish Brabant lies in the centre of Belgium and is greener than many people realise. To the east of Leuven lies the Hageland, with rolling hills, vineyards, orchards and castles. To the west lies the Pajottenland, a landscape of fields, sunken lanes and farmhouses that has inspired painters for centuries.

For young families, Flemish Brabant is a handy base. You’ll be staying in the countryside, surrounded by animals and fields, yet you’re still just a short distance from a lively town like Leuven or a large playground or park nearby.

Why go on holiday in Flemish Brabant?

Going on holiday in Flemish Brabant means choosing variety close to home. One day you might go for a walk through a wood or past a castle; the next, you might visit the Meise Botanical Garden with its enormous greenhouses or take a stroll through Leuven’s old town.

Many of the accommodation options are small-scale and situated on a farm or farmstead, with animals and toys within easy reach. Children can spend the whole day outdoors, whilst you know you’re never far from civilisation.

Vilou’s tip

When visiting the Hageland region, be sure to visit Horst Castle in Holsbeek. This moated castle is set amidst lush greenery, with a moat, an orchard and walking paths surrounding it. For young children, it’s a real fairytale castle, and the walk around it is short enough for little legs.
