West Flanders

The sea, polders and hills in the Westhoek

About West Flanders

West Flanders is the province of the Belgian coast, but also of the green hinterland beyond it. By the sea, you can stroll along wide beaches and dykes in places such as De Panne, Westende and Blankenberge. A few kilometres inland lies the Westhoek, with the hop fields around Poperinge, the hills of the Heuvelland and small villages where life moves at a much slower pace.

West Flanders is also home to cities such as Bruges and Ypres, with their squares, canals and stories. This means you can easily combine a seaside holiday with a day out in the city or the countryside.

Why go on holiday in West Flanders?

Going on holiday in West Flanders means enjoying the seaside without a long journey. With the coastal tram, you can travel the entire length of the coast without a car, from village to village – which is an adventure in itself for young children. Plopsaland De Panne is just round the corner, and there’s always something to discover in the dunes and on the beach.

Those who prefer the countryside will find farmsteads, farms and holiday homes nestled amongst the fields in the Westhoek. The distances are short, so you can choose anew every day: the beach, animals or a cycle ride through the polders.

Vilou’s tip

Head to Oostduinkerke to watch the shrimp fishermen on horseback. The fishermen ride their horses into the sea and drag nets through the surf, just as has been done here for centuries. For young children, it’s an impressive sight: large horses in the waves, and afterwards a bucket full of prawns.

Finish off with a waffle or an ice cream on the seafront. It’s simply part of the experience on the Belgian coast.
